I am not particularly interested in an Online Program. I do not have a Bachelor's yet. So I have 3 questions in total: 1) what school is recommended. 2) is an Associate's Degree or comparable good enough (as Paralegal degree). 3) what is the difference in Online and Classroom programs – which is better received by employers and also good for students? Thanks!!!
Paralegal certificate, Paralegal Assoc degree, Paralegal Studies degree are options, right?
1) Here is a list of American Bar Association (ABA) approved schools, just click on your state: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/home.html
You definitely want to go to an ABA accredited school. Potential employers WILL ask. I got asked if my school was ABA accredited on every single interview I went on!
2) An associate's degree is the best way to go. A certificate means nothing to law firms, and a bachelor's is not necessary. Having an associate's degree puts you above the pack, especially if it is from an ABA accredited school.
3) Just like a paralegal certificate, an online degree means nothing to law firms. First, there are no ABA accredited online paralegal programs because you cannot learn this stuff online. Many ABA programs do offer online classes for the general education classes. Seriously, don't waste your time or money on an online degree/certificate. It will not help you. The best thing to do (in my opinion) is to enroll at an ABA accredited school, find a job in a law office as a secretary or clerk, take your gen ed classes online if you want, and finish your degree on campus. Once you graduate you will have law office experience, granted it is not paralegal law office experience, but it is better than nothing. Law offices want paralegals with experience. It is so hard to find a job post graduation. Having law office experience will substantially help you.
If you have any more questions e-mail me. I'd be happy to give you more info.
